The Invention of Teaching Printed Textbooks - What Makes New York Citys Education Different?
The Invention of Teaching Printed Textbooks - What Makes New York City's Education Different?New York City has been on the forefront of education for a long time, being home to many schools. The city has continuously been trying to upgrade and change education to make it more flexible it's always been working towards the goal of excellence. In order to get a feel for the changing world of education, perhaps the best thing to do is to look at the greatest innovations of education in the past. The two greatest are Thomas Edison and Tish Hale. Both Edison and Hale were the ones who discovered that the lesson plan could be written by an individual student and distributed by a person or a group of students as a means of instruction, this was through using 'mirror writing.' This was, in effect, a collage of books of lessons, that were arranged by subject. While this is done today, in some form, it is always a refreshing idea to see someone so inventive in their ideas and the idea of a 'mirr or' works too well.Edison is perhaps the most famous figure for the invention of the school printer, and in his day he was associated with the infamous Thomas Davenport, as the two ran a printing shop together. So, what was it that led to this event? It was originally a form of teaching printed textbooks to be used in the classroom, but was later in 1879 when Edison came across a book called 'The Classroom', which focused on taking the classroom down a step further, and this led to the creation of the first school printers. The invention of the school printer brought about a change in the way that children learned their lessons. Previously, teachers would read out syllables that were placed on the page in front of the student. The teacher would then show the student in between these syllables how to form the lesson word into sentences, or read it out of a text book. When the printer came about, the students would start learning all by themselves, although they still had the option of having lessons from an assistant teacher. There was the difference of the student no longer having to rely on the teacher for teaching, he or she was the one in charge of teaching them.Another amazing innovation of Edison was using mirrors as a means of showing a person the way to an object. This idea came about after he had a hot iron which had a mirror mounted above it. The students, who could now take classes from another student as opposed to a teacher, could either view or touch the object they were supposed to learn about. This is what these two individuals thought of when they created their amazing ideas. It is obvious that these ideas have not only changed the lives of millions of people but will continue to do so for a long time to come.
